Pre-PhD Preparation
If you take part in our Pre-PhD Preparation programme you will register for six low-cost tutorials to prepare for your research degree. You will develop your research plan and work towards creating a succinct proposal that is suitable for an MPhil/PhD Research Programme.
Past candidates have found this scheme extremely beneficial when submitting formal research proposals and applying for research funding — whether at 91ƷƵ or elsewhere.
Students typically attend tutorials at the 91ƷƵ campus but distance learning options are also available.
It is not possible to obtain a Tier 4 visa for the Pre-PhD Preparation programme although it may be possible to make use of the Student Visitor Visa to attend tutorials for a period of up to six months or to study as a distance learner.
When you apply the Research Office will consider your research interests to ensure they align with the University's research areas and supervisory expertise and availability. If suitable, you will be assigned an appropriate supervisor with whom you will develop your research proposal.
Entry Requirements
What you will need
Typical entry requirements for an MPhil or PhD are a good honours degree (First or Upper-Second class) or a relevant Masters degree. Candidates with other qualifications (such as those from overseas) and relevant professional experience are considered individually.
After completing the Pre-PhD Programme you will still need to formally apply and be interviewed to apply for an MPhil/PhD.
Duration
Programme timeline
The maximum time to complete this part-time Pre-PhD Preparation Programme is one year, although some students take considerably less time. Entry to the Pre-PhD Preparation Programme will be subject to the same fixed entry points as full MPhil and PhD study in October and February.
